THE BEST SEARCH ENGINES FOR VIDEOS...TROOKER & ROLLYO IMPRESS

Sometimes you want quick entertainment fast.
Maybe you're bored in line at the store, or have five minutes to kill
before you leave for an appointment. That's when a viral video search
comes in handy, but search engines specializing in this area are few
and far between, so JollyJo.tv tested a number of viral video search
engines for its readers to create a top five list. Each engine was
queried using the same three search terms, two of which were Booleans:
"funny dancing," "weird," and "Anthony Michael Hall."
5. New search engine Viralsauce.com
shows potential, but it's still in alpha stage so it's database is
tiny. It consistently returned ten results per search term. "Funny
dancing" produced "Dance Fatal Funny Clips, a compilation of drunken dancing accidents one might expect to see on America's Funniest Home Videos. "Weird" provided Weird Cloud
as its top result. Finally, the "Anthony Michael Hall" search produced
ten completely unrelated results. No, I'm not interested in watching
Shawn Michaels battle Mr. Kennedy.
4. Kewego.com
came up empty for "funny dancing." If it wasn't a boolean search it
came up videos of Kate Moss pole dancing. "Weird" did better with a top
result of Weird Al Yankovic's "White and Nerdy" video. The "Anthony Michael Hall" search was a bust.
3. Purevideo.com
found 105 results for "funny dancing" with "Dancing Animals" and "Funny Animals" topping the list. "Weird" turned up 105 results topped by the Maxim Online series "Weird Band Alert." "Anthony Michael Hall" netted 92 results with
a Revver.com interview
and a fan video for "Holiday Road" leading the results. Better yet, the engine produced only one unrelated video in the first 25 hits.
2. Rollyo.com
found 3,130 results for "funny dancing" topped by Carolyn Scott and Rookie dancing to "Your the One That I Want" from the "Grease"
soundtrack. "Weird"
produced 3,270 results. The top result had no video, but the next was a Weird Al Video Showcase with 199 videos. The less broad term, "Anthony Michael Hall" produced 18 results but many were Squidoo lens with multiple videos.
1. Trooker.com found xxx results with a walrus dancing to "Smooth Criminal" at the top. "Weird" delivered top results of Weird Al's "Fat" video, but it had been removed. "Close but no cigar," a music video from "Weird Al" Yankovic, animated by John Kricfalusi of "Ren & Stmpy," worked great though. The "Anthony Michael Hall" search netted 182 results topped by "Anthony Michael Hall on The View 6/13/2007" uploaded by a kind soul at YouTube along with a few other clips. (Yes, I subscribed.)
Trooker
and Rollyo boast significant databases and powerful search techniques
that return relevant results without dreck. With a little work
Purevideo could challenge them. Kewego and Viral Sauce have a long way
to go though. Viral Sauce is one to keep an eye on since it has yet to
enter beta testing, leaving it the most open to change.
